Just so you know, this week is Cherry Festival in Traverse City Michigan.

Headlines of the local newspaper said something like, “Local cherries will be used at the festival”.  I certainly hope so.. this is the cherry capitol of the world, after all.

Michigan

Today I happen to be talking to someone about being in Michigan for six months and here for six months.  She looked alarmed and asked if it was safe to leave my house unattended there in Michigan for that long.  Then I realized that all she, like most people, had ever known of heard of are the bad parts of Detroit.

I told her that most of Michigan is actually very neighborly and extremely Midwestern in values and that it is especially true of the Northern parts of the state.  She seemed mystified, as though she had no concept of what I meant by that.

I’m often happy that so few people know what an amazing state it is.  I get to keep more of it for myself and family.  I grew up in Southern Michigan and now that particular area is kind of bad but you travel even 20 miles or less out of town and it’s just like it was when I was growing up.

The Northern part around Traverse City where I live now, it’s practically idyllic.  It is beautiful in the extreme with the Great Lakes all around and multitudes of rivers and smaller lakes, hilly, fertile farm land, forests, country roads and some absolutely wonderful people.

If you are wondering, go to puremichigan.org.   You can also youtube puremichigan video ads.  (there are a lot of funny spoofs on them there too…but don’t buy it.  Michigan is awesome!)

“The State Theater”  (by m jacobs)

This is a restored theater in Traverse City MI.  Michael Moore contributed most of the money and now uses it as an anchor theater for the local film festival.  As you can see, one of his films opened there too.  It’s cool to have a genuine old theater back in original form only with a better sound system.
